Ferret Food

Ferrets of New England .com

What food do you feed?  This is a question I would dance around like a teen ager on prom night. The food debate has been raging for a long time.  Feed raw or dry mix; which dry mixes are the best; what about  kitten food, etc.   Many people feel very strongly about this and will publicly go after someone  for having a different views.  I know I am not the first breeder that has not wanted to align myself publicly with one side or the other.  Anyway the answer is not what you might think.  I do some of almost everything.

When acquiring my ferrets from England I had to promise the breeders that I would feed them a raw diet in accordance with their views.  Other breeders have asked for a ferret dry mix only diet. I have done my best to stay within keeping of our agreements. Many breeders overseas believe that some raw food keeps the ferrets healthy and adds years to their lives.  This can come in the form of rabbit, chicken, pheasant, etc.. As I spoke with different breeders, I learned that quite a few add fresh meat to their ferrets dry mix diet; but few would publicly admit to it. I can understand why.

I do always provide my ferrets with a constantly available dry mix.  I mix 4 or  5 kinds of high quality ferret foods with a good kitten food(this food also changes).  I do keep changing what is in my mix with the newest information.  Only maybe a fourth or less is kitten food.  I have had ferrets imprint on a single kind of food and this can be a big problem if your ferret ever gets loose or you have to give it up. You never know if the brand of food you are using will be pulled from the shelves.  With a food mix your ferret can easily adapt to the change. This also allows you to take advantage of sales on different brands of foods.  As every one knows the same brand of food is rarely on sale every time you go to refill the lockers. This is why I do strongly advocate mixing food.

Many people do not mix their foods because they only have 1-3 ferrets and worry it will go bad before using it. You can try to get trail size bags will help with amount but is not as cost effective This is why I am now offering my mix for sale.
