About Ferrets of New England |
|
We are a husband and wife team that had taken in rescues for almost ten years before making the decision to breed. This decision was based on the poor health and confirmation of the pet store ferrets we had rescued. Many of these ferrets had genetically related problems that shortened their life span to as little as two years.
We both were surprised when we discovered that there were no local private ferret breeders in Massachusetts and people had no choice but to purchase genetically inferior stock. After working closely with the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, we were able to obtain our breeding permit and given the ability to own intact ferrets.
Before starting our breeding endeavor, we knew it was important to attend several AFA shows and see how the breed standards should look and feel. We enjoyed our first show immensely, learned a lot, and picked up a few ribbons on the way. Once we saw how warm and welcoming the breeding community was, we just knew that our decision to breed was the right one.
We have gone out of our way to hand pick some great ferrets from England, allowing us to infuse our lines with new genetics. The key to long-lived animals is greater genetic diversity and we were also able to pull in some great confirmation and personalities.
We feel that we are now in a position to offer the people of New England a choice; no longer are pet store ferrets the only ferrets in New England.
